Opportunities for Artists

Exhibition Proposals

At the Varley Art Gallery, our exhibitions are shaped through curatorial research, partnership, and invitation. While we don’t have an open call for exhibitions, we’re happy to consider proposals from independent curators and institutions. Artists are also welcome to submit their CV and portfolio for us to keep in mind as part of our ongoing research.

We work with professional artists and recognize that expertise comes in many forms. While formal academic credentials are valued, we also prioritize artists with a strong exhibition history, especially in independent, publicly funded, or private galleries. We’re particularly interested in work that engages with contemporary visual art practices and contributes to meaningful conversations. We look for pieces that have been acknowledged within the professional art community. We also value submissions from emerging artists and encourage them to share their work with us. Because we receive a large number of inquiries, we may not be able to respond to every submission, but we appreciate hearing from artists and staying updated on their work. Email submissions can be sent to submissions@markham.ca.

Exhibition Assistance Grants

The Varley Art Gallery is a recommender for the Ontario Arts Council’s Exhibition Assistance Grants. We accept submissions from artists living in Zone 3. Visit the OAC’s website for more information.
